Nicholas Hodges currently serves as a violist with the U.S. Army Strings and the U.S. Army String Quartet in Washington, D.C. He performs as a substitute violist for the Baltimore Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Harrisburg Symphony, Washington Concert Opera, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and Baltimore Concert Artists. He also plays as the violists for the Mellifera Quartet.
In the winter 2019, he assisted Joe Raffa and Edwin Stevens as the composer of the score of their upcoming feature-length film Dark Harbor. The film will premier in September 2019 and will be released shortly after.
Last year Nicholas worked with Zackary Wilcox and Edwin Stevens on their film Hunting Lands. He acted as music advisor for the film and composed incidental music and credits music. Hunting Lands won several awards including Best Film at the Alexandria Film Festival (2018), Audience Winner at Hell's Half Mile Film and Music Festival (2018), Best Cinematography and Best Director at the Hoboken International Film Festival (2018), and Best Feature Film and Best Screenplay at the Idyllwild International Film Festival of Cinema (2018). This film is available on Amazon, Vudu, and other streaming sources.
In June 2016, Nicholas was a soloist at the American Viola Society Festival at Oberlin College as part of the “Rising Stars” series. He has served on faculty at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, the Levine School of Music, and as Creative Director of the State College Suzuki Program. From 2010-2012 Nicholas served as the violist with the Adelphi String Quartet where he performed at various colleges and universities in the Northeast U.S., and served as graduate quartet-in-residence at the University of Maryland. The Adelphi Quartet was a semi-finalist at the Fischoff Competition music. He has studied chamber music with the Guarneri Quartet, Cavani Quartet, Pacifica Quartet, Maia Quartet, and Ying Quartet.
Nicholas received degrees from the Eastman School of Music (BM, Performance and Education), Pennsylvania State University (MM, Performance and Conducting), and the University of Maryland (DMA, Performance). He studied viola with Katherine Murdock, Karin Brown, and Daniel Foster and studied violin with Timothy Ying, James Lyon, David Salness, James Stern, John Eaken, and Odin Rathnam.
Through the generosity of family and friends, Nicholas performs on a viola made by Vincenzo Sannino (ca. 1890) and bows by Auguste Barbé and Arthur Bultitude. He lives in Northern Virginia with his wife and three daughters.
